Podcast 003: Surviving a Life-Changing Road Traffic Accident with Hazel Chaisty
Welcome to Episode 3 of The Rediscovery of Me: Life Stories Podcast.
In this episode, I am joined by the incredible Hazel Chaisty. Here, she discusses surviving a road traffic accident.
In 2004, at the age of 31, Hazel Chaisty was on her way home from work in when she suffered a life-changing injury in a motorbike accident. She claims to be ‘just an ordinary girl from Manchester’, but today Hazel is an international athlete and a member of Team GB. She tells us her remarkable story.
During this episode you will learn about:
- Hazel’s recollection of her motorbike accident and the incredible treatment she received
- The journey to recovery in hospital and at home as a new wheelchair user
- How Hazel adapted to her new existence and the challenges she continues to face every day
- Hazel’s struggle with depression and coming to terms with her injuries
- The practical aspects of what happens when someone is involved in a serious RTA and how to cope financially
- How a chance post on Facebook led to a new chapter in Hazel’s life
- Her inspirational journey as an athlete for Team GB
- Why we shouldn’t live in fear, but instead put our phones away and LIVE!

The book referenced in the podcast is Choke, by Sian Beilock. She also has a fascinating TED Talk which can be found here.
Carol Dwek can be easily found on Google, but her TED Talk is a great place to start if you’re not familiar with her work.
Finally, I think that we should give a huge ‘shout out’ to The Mirror & Picture Factory in Stockport who were so supportive of Hazel when she had her accident. Great to hear of a company being so supportive of its employees!
